Helping You Understand Yourself, Navigate Life, and Find Your Way Forward

Allison M. Smith, MS, LCMHC, is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor who brings a warm, compassionate, and human-centered approach to the therapeutic relationship. Originally from Virginia and now residing in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Allison understands that each person’s story is shaped by their experiences, relationships, environment, challenges, and the choices they make along the way.

Allison began her educational journey in Virginia before taking a pause from academia. She later returned with renewed purpose, earning a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice followed by a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in Counseling Psychology. She has also received specialized training in psychological diagnostic assessment and therapeutic clinical interventions.

As a clinician, Allison’s approach is grounded in Humanistic-Existential therapy, which emphasizes the importance of seeing each person as a whole individual rather than simply focusing on a diagnosis or problem. She believes people possess strengths, insight, and the capacity for growth-even during seasons when those qualities may be difficult for them to recognize in themselves.

Allison strives to create a therapeutic environment where clients feel heard, respected, understood, and free to be honest without judgment. She recognizes that asking for help can be difficult, and she believes therapy should feel like a collaborative process rather than a place where someone simply tells you what to do. Her role is to help clients explore what they are experiencing, understand the patterns that may be affecting their lives, identify their strengths, and develop practical ways to move toward the life they want.

Throughout her career, Allison has maintained a particular passion for supporting children, adolescents, and individuals experiencing behavioral or emotional challenges. She is especially interested in helping young people whose circumstances, environments, or momentary decisions may place them at risk for significant consequences. She believes that challenging behavior often communicates an unmet need and that understanding the person behind the behavior is an essential part of meaningful intervention.

Allison is also passionate about advocacy and believes individuals-particularly young people-deserve to have their voices heard and their circumstances understood. She strives to help clients and families navigate difficult systems and situations while recognizing their dignity, individuality, and potential.

Outside of her professional life, Allison enjoys Polynesian dance workouts, spending time in nature, observing wildlife, creating DIY projects, and making jewelry. Most importantly, she values time with her family and considers those relationships an important part of what keeps her grounded.

Allison’s goal is simple: to meet people where they are, help them better understand where they’ve been, and support them as they work toward where they want to go. She brings both her professional training and her life experiences into her work, with the hope that every person who enters her therapeutic space feels a little more understood, empowered, and capable of moving forward.

03 · What happens next

From this page to a first session

Allison practises through BetterHelp, so the route in is BetterHelp's. This is that sequence, written by Maker Therapy from the platform's published process - not a description of Allison's own practice, and not a promise about how quickly anything happens.

  1. A questionnaire, not a booking form

BetterHelp opens with a set of questions about what you are dealing with, what you want from therapy, and any preferences on the therapist. You are not booking Allison at this point.

  2. Naming Allison specifically

BetterHelp matches algorithmically by default, so asking for Allison is a step you have to take. There is a field for requesting a specific therapist during sign-up, and you can switch afterwards from your account. Starting from a link on this page does not by itself assign you to Allison.

  3. If the caseload is full

You will be offered somebody else rather than put on a waitlist. Worth knowing, because it is easy to assume a match is the person you asked for.

  4. The first conversation

A first session is typically history and orientation: what brought you, what has been tried, what you want to be different. It is also where the questions in the next section belong.

  5. If the fit is wrong

Changing therapist on BetterHelp does not need a reason. A first session that does not click is common and is not a verdict on therapy. That option existing is the main practical difference between a platform and a private practice.
