What Shanna says about the work

Reproduced in full and unedited - not summarised, not tightened, not rewritten in a house voice.

I am licensed in Colorado with 12 years of professional work experience. I have experience in helping clients with stress, anxiety, coping with grief, coping with loss, motivation, self esteem, confidence, & depression. I also have experience working with coping with life changes.

My journey has taken me through various correctional settings, where I've had the privilege of working with adult clients of all ages, helping them navigate the complexities of Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety, Trauma, Personality Disorders, and Addiction. My experience includes everything from providing resources and meeting case management needs to developing coping skills and processing trauma, all aimed at helping clients heal and live the lives they desire. During my six years at Jefferson Center for Mental Health on their Criminal Justice Team, I worked extensively with clients who had dual diagnoses, addressing many intricate dynamics along the way.

I believe that therapy is most effective when it's a collaborative effort between the therapist and client. Open and honest communication, along with building strong rapport, are the cornerstones of my approach. I meet clients where they are, working with them to develop a treatment plan that focuses on their goals and helps them move towards a healthy and fulfilling life. I firmly believe that every individual is valuable and created with a purpose. My goal is to help clients recognize their worth and live out their purpose.

My therapeutic approach is eclectic, tailored to meet clients where they are. I utilize a variety of methods, including Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Solution-Focused approaches. This flexibility allows me to adapt to the unique needs of each client, ensuring that our work together is both effective and meaningful. I believe that you are the expert of your story and that you have many strengths that will assist you in overcoming things that challenge you. Taking the first step to sign up for therapy can take courage and I am proud of you for getting started!

03 · What happens next

From this page to a first session

Shanna practises through BetterHelp, so the route in is BetterHelp's. This is that sequence, written by Maker Therapy from the platform's published process - not a description of Shanna's own practice, and not a promise about how quickly anything happens.

  1. A questionnaire, not a booking form

BetterHelp opens with a set of questions about what you are dealing with, what you want from therapy, and any preferences on the therapist. You are not booking Shanna at this point.

  2. Naming Shanna specifically

BetterHelp matches algorithmically by default, so asking for Shanna is a step you have to take. There is a field for requesting a specific therapist during sign-up, and you can switch afterwards from your account. Starting from a link on this page does not by itself assign you to Shanna.

  3. If the caseload is full

You will be offered somebody else rather than put on a waitlist. Worth knowing, because it is easy to assume a match is the person you asked for.

  4. The first conversation

A first session is typically history and orientation: what brought you, what has been tried, what you want to be different. It is also where the questions in the next section belong.

  5. If the fit is wrong

Changing therapist on BetterHelp does not need a reason. A first session that does not click is common and is not a verdict on therapy. That option existing is the main practical difference between a platform and a private practice.

04 · Before you commit

2 questions worth asking Shanna

Built from what Shanna actually lists, so they are answerable and specific rather than generic. Maker Therapy's, not Shanna's - Shanna has not seen them and is under no obligation to answer any of them.

  • “How do you decide when someone is ready to work on a traumatic memory itself?”

Pacing is the biggest safety question in trauma work. A clear, unhurried answer here matters more than any credential.

  • “How do you handle the gap between sessions if something comes up?”

On BetterHelp this varies a great deal by therapist. Better to know the rhythm now than to discover it on a bad week.
